Trail Sessions add the vast benefits of the outdoors to those of traditional psychotherapy, and puts your healing of mind and body in motion.

Wellness of body and mind are so closely connected, that engaging your body in the healing of your mind naturally accelerates results. The trail becomes a dynamic work space for your body and mind.

I encourage letting go of technology to embrace the natural beauty around us while doing physical activity. Trail Sessions Therapy was developed out of the belief that one’s emotional health is closely tied to their connection to nature and time spent outdoors. The ground beneath your feet will center you. The movement will unstick you from where you are stuck.

The trail hiking therapy sessions emphasize the distance you cover emotionally. It will focus on your strength and empowerment. Every step is a manifestation of your progress, every inhale is energy, every exhale is letting go of what does not serve you.

You set the pace and I will match it. Slower, meditative walks allow for clearing of the mind and free-flowing contemplation. Where it all began

The idea for Trail Sessions was literally birthed on the trail. In the mornings after dropping the kids off, I would hike with a close friend. I was sharing my personal feelings of restlessness and made the parallel to how many of my patients feel a similar level restlessness with their capacity to change.

It struck me right there, the forward motion, progress and being out in nature brings me a sense of clarity. It made me wonder how taking therapy off the couch, out of the office and moving could impact their results.

The mind/body connection research shows that people who struggle with anxiety, depression and ADHD see similar results to taking medication if they are out in nature getting daily exercise. Exercise has been proven to help regulate emotions, decrease symptoms of depression and anxiety while increasing self-confidence in making life choices.

And, as quickly as I had the idea and shared it with my friend, I started to doubt myself and quickly talked myself out of it. I started to question if anyone would take it seriously, would people feel safe and comfortable walking (literally) the journey with me.

I have been doing Trail Sessions with patients for the past two years, but it has taken me two years to get the word out and for me to want to share how much getting out of the office and off the couch has provided my patients with an appreciation of something larger than themselves, helped cultivate a more positive mindset and increased mindfulness.

Are you tired of having amazing ideas that bring you energy and excitement, but you get stuck in your head or paralyzed by wondering what other people will think — or even worse,

What if you fail?

Trail Sessions may be a place for you to explore, create and challenge yourself to cultivate the life you want and not be afraid to admit it. While hiking and walking is not the focus of our sessions together, it is the tool to enhance our sessions together.

FAQ's

Are Trail Sessions confidential?

Because Trail Sessions are held outdoors in public spaces, there is no way to guarantee 100% confidentiality. It is possible that others could overhear our conversations. It is possible that others could recognize you or me while walking during sessions. If someone recognizes you and stops to talk to you, I will follow your lead. I recommend you wave and we continue walking. We can discuss your preference in the initial session.

What happens when Mother Nature intervenes?

Because we’re so fortunate as to live in Southern California where we don’t have much weather to contend with, this doesn’t often pose as much of a problem, but it is up to you if you want to walk/hike in the weather. We can reschedule, walk anyways (with an umbrella and appropriate clothing when needed), or meet indoors. Many times I have found the benefits of physical activity and being in nature often outweigh the discomfort of the weather.

Are there any disadvantages to Trail Sessions?

Every person is different and some may need and prefer the containment of the therapy office. Confidentiality of our conversations while outdoors cannot be guaranteed. Available days/times of sessions may be affected due to weather and daylight limitations. If you'd prefer office therapy, please click here.
